It’s all the rage – cycling with no roads involved. Our event had no bikes either – a virtual bicycle tour, planning our route and using maps to find out what we would have seen, if only it hadn’t been so dark outside.
Conkers and Bridges
At last there are conkers lying around so we finally did our annual conker championship. After some thorough tution in gameplay (and safety!) from Baaloo, battle royale commenced. Some of the conkers lasted a long time, except Skip’s which Baaloo shattered in 3 goes. Later, bridge-building with art straws. Building a bridge with 12 straws long enough to get a toy car over the chasm. Some designs were very novel but not very practical 🙂
Show us your hobbies
Two Scouts brought along their collections, one of hats and another of bottle tops, and told us about them, earning their hobbies badges in the process.
Wide games and hot dogs
We went up to a local camp site and played some wide games, finishing up round the camp fire with sausages.
Quite strong on paper
The Patrols competed to build the strongest newspaper bridge. The Leaders had a go too, but were soundly out-built. We had various designs, including a suspension bridge, but the best could support a seated adult. Arup and Buro Happold have nothing on us!
An active term
We’ve done a number of Challenge Awards recently, so the Patrol Leaders’ Council decided that we should cover some Activity Badges in this term’s programme.
Day 8: Homeward bound
Everything packed (well, nearly everything – we left some freezer blocks in the warden’s fridge), off site and home for lunch.
Now the planning for next year starts…
Softly fades the light of day, as our camp fire dies away

Day 7: Climbing with chips
The climbing wall, pedal cart racing, the adventure playground, and one last game of Danish Longball. Then our traditional last dinner of fish & chips (no washing up, ‘cos we’ve already cleaned the pots), and a final sit round the camp fire.
Day 6: Canoes, kayaks and curry
And some sailing too. We spent the day at the Longridge boating centre, and then cooked Thai chicken curry with left-overs.
