We finished the summer as usual, with an evening of backwoods cooking at Harmer Green Scout camp site. That’s backwoods, not backwards – cooking without utensils. Google for recipes – can be very good!

Follow the Code
Working towards our Promise Challenge, we discussed how we would like each other to behave, remembering our Scout Law and Promise. Then we wrote a Code of Conduct for everyone to sign.
Chessington World of Adventures
About 100 Scouts from Hitchin District, plus leaders, went on a day trip to Chessington. Here we all are at the end of the day:
Get your bearings
We took compasses out to a nearby open space, and practised walking on bearings – useful when you’re out on the hills, as we discussed.
Wide games
The traditional Scouting name for team games in a wide open space, in this case a local woodland.
Come on England!
Nearly all the Scouts wanted to watch the England-Uruguay match, so our meeting was cancelled. Sadly, all our cheering didn’t do much good.
Chariot racing
Our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all took part in the District chariot racing. Our Leaders and supporters also entered the adult races. We didn’t win anything, but a great time was had by all.

While the District chariot racing was going on, we invited spectators to make and launch bottle rockets:
Making a splash
The Scout Troop went to Fairlands Valley for an evening of canoeing, dragon boats and kayaking.
